Notes

The structure and detail of a single Eucalyptus stem is captured through a monotype printing process. A unique print is created by transfer of inks to paper through the pressure of an etching press, this piece has been worked up afterwards with brushes and an ink wash.

Sophie Coe trained as an architect and spent 5 years living in Australia and recalls her connection with the plant native to Australia. She says, "I love the detail and the graphic shapes of the leaves, it appeals to the designer/architect side of me. Using a colour not normally associated with eucalyptus allows us to see it anew, making these elements the primary focus."

Sophie wants to draw people's attention to the ethereal quality of nature, the beauty in the small things or the quiet moments that can go unnoticed and under appreciated. "Whether it’s the power of the sea, the wind through a grove of bamboo, sunlight through a canopy, rain, the detail and structure of a leaf. There's so much beauty around us, both the big views and the details, I’m in awe of it. I try to capture the mood, the wonder, the feeling of being there, the elements perhaps less visible with a passing glance."

Living and working in Australia and Asia, Sophie developed an appreciation for natures driving force. She works with charcoal, paint and various printmaking and cyanotype techniques. the medium is carefully chosen to best represent the subject.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
