Notes

Hold on Tight is a screen print inspired by an image of The Outsider periodical, Loujon Press 1961.

The Outsider was a 1960's literary periodical famed for publishing the works of Charles Bukowski and Jack Kerouac. Nicola draws on the stylistically compelling graphics and text used on the cover of Outsider. The font is created by hand using paper collaged together to make the letters, (i.e. it’s not a digital font). This is then scanned into a computer to complete the design of the print.

Nicola’s background in Night Club visuals provides her with a finely tuned acumen regarding the power of promotional imagery. With skilful use of analogue and digital means, the language of graphics and semiology is rendered as spontaneous and dynamic, immediate and rude.

In Nicola's work graphic forms are carefully disassembled, processed and re-applied to present a new and irreverent collage, both playful and mischievous.

Her work is inspired by music and it's subcultures, dance, typography, symbols, language, patterns and process. Since 1997 she has been involved in projecting bespoke visuals specialising in analogue slide, 8mm and 16mm film to produce projections for various music based events: club nights, live bands and dance performances.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
