The Crossover Project
20 JUNE 2022 - 29 JULY 202218. Sophie Rawlingson
Broken
This unique artwork is part of The Crossover Project collection, made from waste and surplus materials. The sculpture can be hanged at an angle from the petals, from the top onto a wall or casually leaned against a wall.
About the artwork
‘Broken’ by Sophie Rawlingson is a reflection on human-made climate chaos from rising temperature to unpredictable weather and the impact it has on nature. Sophie’s mosaicked flower is a symbol of what could happen if we don’t take climate change seriously. Using only wood offcuts, it represents a desperate attempt to fix a broken planet once it’s too late and the imminent risk of nature falling into pieces.
By calling for change, Sophie invites the viewer to appreciate the resilience of nature to thrive in even the toughest of environments like plants growing through cracks in the pavement and reclaiming urban spaces in a post-apocalyptic view. At its heart, it is a celebration of the strength of nature while acknowledging its fragility caused by our actions.
Sophie chose to work exclusively with Grain wood offcuts to celebrate the brand’s strong accountability and environmental consciousness through a unique approach focused on people and the planet.

About the Crossover Project
For the first time at such a scale, The Crossover Project brings together the worlds of art, design and fashion in a bid to tackle waste within the creative industries. With 1.6m tonnes of furniture and bulky waste ending in landfill each year in the UK, the project aims to salvage waste from the design and fashion sectors and present it to an exciting roster of talented emerging artists represented by avant-garde gallery Bleur to create unique works of art using art as a force for change to raise awareness around the need for circularity of materials to tackle waste. The collection of works will be exhibited in an immersive exhibition at The Royal Exchange in London from 23rd June until 8th July. Partner brands include Diesel, Ron Dorff, Georg Jensen, Elle Decoration and Edward Bulmer and others.
