About the artwork
‘In The Drink’ by artist Beth Fraser tells the story of a fictional world in which sea levels have risen to unprecedented apocalyptic levels forcing humans to live under water, trading shoes with fins and sunglasses with diving masks. Familiar accessories are altered to fit this new reality, house plants becoming house seaweeds. Using wood shaving offcuts to create patterns, the three-dimensional element of the artwork creates an alarming realistic feel to the story.
Through the playful shadows and surrealist pose of the woman, there is an underlying darker side to Beth’s work. By recreating a home environment but under the water, Beth aims to unsettle the viewer with this alternative unfamiliar vision being presented to them. Beth’s reflection is an invitation to think about what the future looks like and what impact it will have on our livelihoods if we continue in this trajectory. In her distinctive style, Beth distorts the human body of her muse under water to communicate a sense of urgency and call for collective action at all levels.

About the Crossover Project
For the first time at such a scale, The Crossover Project brings together the worlds of art, design and fashion in a bid to tackle waste within the creative industries. With 1.6m tonnes of furniture and bulky waste ending in landfill each year in the UK, the project aims to salvage waste from the design and fashion sectors and present it to an exciting roster of talented emerging artists represented by avant-garde gallery Bleur to create unique works of art using art as a force for change to raise awareness around the need for circularity of materials to tackle waste. The collection of works will be exhibited in an immersive exhibition at The Royal Exchange in London from 23rd June until 8th July. Partner brands include Diesel, Ron Dorff, Georg Jensen, Elle Decoration and Edward Bulmer and others.
