Jeff McMillan (born 1968)

American artist studied fine arts at universities in Texas and Alabama before moving to London in 1998. His work is primarily about painting approached through materiality and process, often in collaboration with the effects of time and natural elements.

McMillan created his first series of woodblock prints while resident in Rome in 2020. Inspired by the composite marble designs in the floors of Roman churches and ideas of spoglia (the re-use or recycling of ancient architectural materials), the artist gathered found wood in the form of discarded furniture, pallets, and even centuries-old timbers from buildings in restoration. By combining these boards into simple blocks for printing he created an amalgam of both contemporary and historic Rome, each hand-printed work imparting the textures of the city itself.
