Notes

Painted while the artist was living in Hanoi, Vietnam this seemingly chaotic composition is actually structured around overlapping square and circular grids.

Sam Smyth is a UK based artist best known for his hard-edged geometric paintings and collages. Drawing on the ideas of minimalist and post-painterly abstract painting from the 60s and 70s, Sam’s work tends towards being formally reductive but with a strong focus on colour interaction, often employing a vibrant palette. Sam is drawn to abstraction not only as a free vehicle for aesthetic exploration but also as an opportunity to think about the physical properties of light and the act of looking itself.
