UIC Gallery 400 40th anniversary
26 OCTOBER 2023 - 17 NOVEMBER 2023Notes
Gary Cannone describes this work as, “When I find myself unable to say a specific word or term in conversation I freeze trying to retrieve what I mean to say. I either am unable to remember the word later or will look it up from contextual clues. I gather the words from a week and make a stitching of them from the list.”
Gary Cannone was born in Chicago in 1964. He played in Punk Rock bands in the early 1980s and studied art at UIC (where he worked at UIC Gallery 400) and later University of Chicago. Cannone received a BFA from the University of Illinois Chicago in 1987. He has been exhibiting artwork nationally and internationally since the early 1990s. He identifies as a crip artist because his work is greatly affected in concept and execution by his disabilities due to multiple sclerosis. He resides in Los Angeles.
