The Trial was conceived and painted during lockdown. It deals with themes of introspection and self-awareness by placing a central figure in an environment where everyday objects are displaced and the familiar becomes questioned. A man curls upon a table of seemingly infinite height within an inky lagoon whilst plastic chairs, the most banal of objects, take on a sinister role suggesting an absent or recently departed audience. Referring to Kafka's novel of the same name, this painting scratches the surface of the everyday, to reveal an undercurrent where nothing is stable or predictable, where rules are transient and the future veiled.
The Trial was selected for The Wilderness Project, an exhibition themed on the lockdown at The Crypt Gallery, Euston Rd.

Notes
As a figurative artist, I seek to explore the human condition. Often my subjects are caught in the act of self-confrontation in situations which are disconcerting or improbable. However, these figures are not symbols, but highly detailed representations of real people, with real emotions and experiences.
I work in oil on canvas, densely layering the paint to create an effect realistic at a distance, yet richly textured in proximity. In this way, I aim to portray an intensely physical and intimate rendition of the subject's 'moment'.
