Notes

Cecilia Bonilla was born in Uruguay in 1973 and lives and works in London. Through the use of manual intervention and digital manipulation, Bonilla’s work explores our relationship with the commercial mass-produced image and female representation in mass-media.

In Between Animals and Trees 33, images of women performing classic yoga poses are juxtaposed with images appropriated from a vintage insect encyclopaedia. ‘Nature’ takes the place of facial and bodily features, allowing for new relationships to form between the subjects, their bodies and their environment. Following a long-term interest in Freudian association of animality and sexual desire combined with Animal Horror B-movies, this series evokes feelings of threat, infestation and fear in relation to the current crisis.

This work was produced for PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA. PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA is an ongoing work on paper initiative curated by international gallerist, curator and artist Zavier Ellis (director of CHARLIE SMITH LONDON). The project was launched in response to the first lockdown in order to support artists during challenging times. All work is unique. New work is consistently offered on www.artsy.net/charlie-smith-london. To enquire or for further information please email Zavier at [email protected].

This lot is kindly donated by Cecilia Bonilla and CHARLIE SMITH LONDON.
