Terrence Higgins Trust, The Timed Auction 2021
18 FEBRUARY 2021 - 11 MARCH 2021Notes
"I have recently been exploring themes around celebrity and nostalgia particularly in the current climate where musicians are struggling to connect with their audience through live performance. I began researching photographs of artists that I admire yet never had the opportunity to see live, I’m attracted to the idea that their performance will always be somewhat mythical the classic “if only I was there”. This artwork uses a photograph of Freddie Mercury taken at Wembley Arena by Steve Rapport, I contacted Steve and had permission to use his photo as the source image for this Linocut. The laborious process of carving lino serves as an interesting juxtaposition to the immediacy of live music photography.
I am an Artist / Printmaker working in various relief printing methods, primarily wood and linocuts. I produce limited edition hand carved and printed gig posters for internationally touring bands as well as record sleeves, merchandise design and private commissions.
Previous clients include: CLUTCH/BLACK BANANAS/IMPERIAL STATE, ELECTRIC/SAINT VITUS/ORCHID/BLUES PILLS/KARMA TO BURN/RADKEY and COLISEUM
My work can be found in the permanent collections of Arizona state university / Bradley College Illinois / Asagaya college of Art & Design / Norwich School of Art and numerous private collections throughout the world." - Matt Valentine, 2021
