Terrence Higgins Trust, The Timed Auction 2021
18 FEBRUARY 2021 - 11 MARCH 2021Notes
Graham Dolphin is a British artist born 1972 in Stafford. His work has been exhibited extensively and is included in the collections of MIMA, Wiesbaden Museum, Zabludowicz collection, David Roberts and Viktor & Rolf. His work frequently explores the concepts of self-identification and idolism.
Made during the Covid-19 lockdown, Not Now When is one of a series of works on paper which re-appropriate half heard slogans and language from the rolling news agenda. Words and particularly slogans during this time are being used to enforce, persuade and impose. Meanings slip, intentions are confused, and the graphite depictions of smoke mirror this floating, flux state, with the distorted text appearing amidst. The chance for misreadings offer new perspectives, and questions of how language can be weaponised.
This work was produced for PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA. PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA is an ongoing work on paper initiative curated by international gallerist, curator and artist Zavier Ellis (director of CHARLIE SMITH LONDON). The project was launched in response to the first lockdown in order to support artists during challenging times. All work is unique. New work is consistently offered on www.artsy.net/charlie-smith-london. To enquire or for further information please email Zavier at [email protected].
This lot is kindly donated by Graham Dolphin and CHARLIE SMITH LONDON.
