Notes

London-based Phillip Prokopiou is a self-taught photographer who established Studio
Prokopiou with his partner in life and art Panos Poimenidis. Their work explores camp theory, self-invention and LGTBQ identity through a mix of high and low brow aesthetics, from popular culture, mythology to art history.

The Hubris of Marsyas is a portrait of Marsyas the satyr who picked up an Aulos dropped by the goddess Athena and played it so well that he attracted the attention of Apollo, the god of music. The satyr’s dangerous arrogance in playing the instrument ends in dire consequence for the satyr after Apollo challenges him to a musical contest.
