Notes

Conceived through Jess Burgess' commentary on the modern consumption of imagery, Izzy is a disruptive pictorial composition akin to the vast swathes of digital media that we can just discard without much thought.

Leaning on her own experiences, Jess realises these images of women and interiors to mirror her own research into the "virtual window" - the relationship we have with technology and the impact that has on our own creativity.

By bringing more traditional, painterly techniques into the same space as digital media, Jess investigates how the process of painting as a discipline, is a far more meaningful and interactive way of instigating a dialogue between our existing histories as humans, and the new material we create today.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
