Notes
A dreamlike performance space is pieced together in translucent paint, using elements from a black and white photograph of the artist’s grandmother in costume for a cabaret dance tour in the 1950s.
Diana Palmer’s paintings address the relationship between a figure and its environment. Recent works depict dancing plants or people, morphing into, or emerging from, a landscape. Conveying movement, the pieces capture observed and abstracted fragments of light, atmospheric changes or physical gestures.
Diana likes to work with a vertical portrait canvas, as this shape relates to her standing body. Whether inspired by a memory of a place or a photograph, the process of painting is a playful interpretation of spatial relations. Performing figures may be visible, or else the artist' perception of her surroundings may be the sole subject matter.
