Notes
Inspired by the great art of the Greek Hellenistic period, William Jones distills the human form into simple line drawing for this print.
The artist works directly from life making sketches of life models before translating his drawings into simplified, carefully considered prints. The pose in this Male Seated hints August Rodin's famous sculpture, The Thinker. It depicts a man lost in thought, unaware of how his body language describes his mood.
The artist draws inspiration from classical sculpture, in particular the Hellenistic Art of Greece, a time in the history of sculpture where the human form was depicted in a more naturalistic and expressive way. Whilst he respects the long-established craftsmanship of printmaking, William is interested in bringing a contemporary feel to his work with loose line drawings and subtle variations in tone where the charm of the accidental is celebrated.
With a degree in Sound and Music Production, William's musical influences run concurrent with his printmaking. He sites Bill Callahan, the lo-fi experimental guitarist, and Hiroshi Yoshimura, the Japanese pioneer of ambient music, as having an impact on his work.
