Notes
The two dimensional world of painting clashes with the three dimensionality of sculpture in this hard edge installation by the 2019 Saint Martin's graduate Melissa Hartley.
Infused with geometric abstraction, both on the painted surface of the birch plywood and its displayed position, Melissa Hartley has created a kaleidoscope of forms using precision and balance to create an outstandingly unique and optically charged installation.
The fragmented design on the front of the work that bridges the gaps between each bar, and the fluorescent colours on the reverse that transform the wall into a glowing support, challenge the viewer's understanding of space, shape and colour in an artwork.
