Notes

Anna Mac looks to the rooftops and buildings of her Suffolk home for the starting point of her paintings and this work, The Yellow Chimney Pot, even features 'Suffolk Pink' - the county's famous shade of colour.

The origins of the colour date back to the 12th century when yarn dyers created hues of pink by adding natural pigments to traditional white limewash. Elderberries, blackthorn, sloes and ox blood could all have been mixed with lime or buttermilk to give Suffolk architecture its distinct decorative appeal.

Anna Mac describes her painting process as a game. "The evolution of each painting can come quickly if each move fits with the next, and some can be a complex journey of changes and wrong moves. Either way, a piece builds and builds until everything 'fits'".

This Tetris like way of working results in satisfyingly compact and carefully composed paintings. Whilst architectural structures can be identified, the lack of detail, and flattened block colours allow the work to be read as geometric abstraction.
