Top 5 Artists | Beatrice Levine
A spotlight on the top 5 next gen artists from those that know. This week's Top 5 comes from Kansas City-based art historian, provenance researcher and digital content creator, Beatrice Levine.
---------
Beatrice Levine, also known as @culturequota online, is an art historian and provenance researcher specializing in Nazi-era art looting.
Growing up between Germany, England, and the United States, Beatrice became enamored with the various pop culture and art history she was exposed to and how frequently these two worlds interacted with one another. After studying at John Cabot University in Rome, she completed her BA in Art History at Loyola University Chicago. She then went on to work in the U.S. auction and museum industries, where the systemic mishandling of looted property inspired her to return to academia for further research and intervention. Beatrice holds specialty certificates in Holocaust and Genocide Studies (University of Kansas) and Nazi-era Provenance Research (University of Denver). She is currently working on her MA in Holocaust and Genocide at Gratz College.
In 2015, she began her Instagram account, Culture Quota, to bring levity to an art community that often takes itself too seriously and to celebrate the pop culture/fine art intersections that inspired her to pursue a career in the arts. Her top five artists featured are creators who are active online, inspire her and her followers, and fit the pop culturally informed ethos of Culture Quota.

"A painter and professor, Telvin Wallace uses the visual language of Western art history’s old masters to explore the concept of 'double consciousness.' W.E.B. Du Bois’ famous idea refers to the struggle Black people face in staying true to their culture while simultaneously conforming to the expectations of white society."

Kimberly George
Images from Artist's Website
"Kimberly George is a Maryland-based artist who blurs the lines between sculpture and painting. Her textural canvases celebrate the fluidity of fabric, forever freezing them in motion. George’s minimalist articulation would be right at home in Kim Kardashian’s beige Calabasas palace, and that’s enough to convince me and my followers to stan."

Breanna Johnson

"Breanna Johnson is an abstract painter based in Lawrence, Kansas. The play between color and texture on her canvases elevates the Midwest art scene, imploring viewers to expand their preconceived notions of what art is or, more accurately, what abstract art is. And there is nothing we love more at CQ than proving no, your kid could not do that."
