Notes

Circus Freaks was made in July 2021 after my first post-lockdown public outing to Zippos. The environment and sense of social anxiety pushed me to think about the spectator and the spectated, about who is watching who and why. It is acrylic and charcoal on paper for immediacy of recording, the work contemplates the alien, the monstrous, the different, who stands out and why. How and where do we fit in? Who is being looked at? And who gets to tell the story?

The figures that populate my work are often engaged in the process of looking at those who are looking at them. My practice is a circular process, I am drawn to performance, theatre and drama in the painting process. As in any good story, an element of surprise is crucial for the work to feel it is developing towards an end. In the wake of the pandemic and suffering some injuries as a result, I am exploring resilience and what makes us human. The zoo has opened and it is possible to again consume the spectacle of the animal. In life we are taught to observe and consume everything we can; is there something in slowing down and re-focusing on what is important? What is important?
