Notes

The word Dombo derives from the Shona and Ndebele language of Zimbabwe and means rock formation. The work Dombo has been inspired by the astonishing and deeply spiritual views of the Matopos hills in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe, and the Domboshava region in Mashonaland, Zimbabwe.

Boulder boulder
You are so heavy
Where can I rest you
So in peace you will be
One on top of another
I balance thee
Oh boulder boulder
Now in place
And I can see

Whitney-Jade is a Practice based researcher exploring the movement and behaviour of watercolour painting in relation to imperialist thinking and the intelligible other. A personal connection to wildlife and remote wilderness areas of Zimbabwe is the origin of inspiration for Whitney-Jade Halsted. Born in 1988, the complexities of Whitney-Jade’s experience growing up in Zimbabwe and the navigation of her life now living in London probe contested histories of colonialism and mechanisms of power that have given rise to a creative explosion of meaningful artistic endeavours.
