Farewell Fly Bye
An etching with Aquatint
40 by 36 cm
Edition size 50
9th of 50
This is a personal look back at 2019. The image is populated by figures and characters who I have sketched at some point during the year. There are references to the political movements and marches which dominated the news as well as the Liverpool hustings for election to the European Parliament. There are people in Christmas fancy dress, a tennis coach, a lawyer. I’m there in Hi Viz jacket and helmet ready to draw a construction site; an Opera singer with artificial pregnant bump stands beside her suitcase. There’s an African mask at the McManus, Dundee and a Wimbledon line judge. Finally no. 1 in the key shows “Desiree” a 19th Century German actor dressed as Jupiter disguised as a fly, a postcard image purchased from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
