Georgie Hopton (born 1967, North Yorks) graduated from St Martins in 1989 with a series of sculptures even though she had enrolled on a painting degree course. She’s not stopped enjoying the back and forth between the 2d and 3D worlds since and relishes the interplay. Her output has expanded to include film, photography and collage and doesn’t stop there. Her lifelong love of craft has resulted in a foray into soft furnishings and rugs. Her upcoming show with Lyndsey Ingram in 2023 will focus on these.
Solo shows include Lyndsey Ingram, Poppy Sebire, Milton Keynes Gallery and Cabinet, (UK). Brancolini Grimaldi (Rome). Group shows include The Foundling Museum, The Lowry, Spike Island, Kate MacGarry, The New Art Centre (UK). Spruth Magers, (Germany), Flag Art Foundation (NY). Galeria Lema, Sao Paolo.
She was shortlisted for the MaxMara Art Prize in 2007 and has public artworks at both the Royal London Hospital and The Home Office. Her work is housed in several permanent collections including Tate Modern and the Arts Council Collection. The Guardian named her as one of 'the next generation of cutting-edge artists'.
