01 APRIL 2022 - 25 APRIL 2022Notes
In his iconic Ways of Seeing, John Berger famously remarked: ‘Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.’ For Adelina, Berger’s observation is very telling not only of the way in which men relate to women, but more importantly still, of the way in which women relate to themselves – and she is no exception. Her artistic practice explores feminine identity and the feeling of ‘being watched’. Adelina's subjects are often depicted as posing for a picture, being put on the stage, or as Judith Butler might have it, ‘performing femininity’.
Adelina is a Lithuanian painter and tattoo artists living and working in London. She holds a BA in Illustration and Visual Media from the London College of Communication. Adelina’s work has been exhibited at a variety shows across London and Manchester, drawing on stereotypes of Eastern European visual culture.
