Mario Correa has developed a multidisciplinary painting practice that encompasses drawing, painting, printmaking, woodworking and installation. Enlisting a wide variety of techniques, the artist moves through genres of abstraction, still life, and portraiture, all with an emphasis on physicality in relation to mark making and materiality.

Correa mixes tools and methods of various cultural productions through the commonality of the manual act, figuring a social connection between artistic production, skilled labor, and service to a broader public. In this space, furniture design, interiors, and functional objects have relationship to printmaking, painting, and drawing.

In 2017, Mario Correa and partner, Zen Sekizawa began a collaboration under the name, MANO YA, that combines their disciplines to create handmade goods, furniture, and art, prioritizing their communities of Little Tokyo and Chinatown in Los Angeles. MANO YA shares resources with and is responsive to several community organizations including, Nikkei Progressives, Sustainable Little Tokyo, Vigilant Love, and Chinatown Community for Equitable Development. Mario Correa was born in 1976 in Brawley, California. In 2001 he received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts and was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant. The artist’s work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. Correa is included in the Contemporary Collection at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
