Notes

About

Lucy Churchill is a sculptor whose innovative, taboo-breaking work addresses women's sexuality and body-autonomy with a frank female gaze.

Classically trained as a stonecarver in the architectural and memorial trade (her work adorns cathedrals and churchyards across Britain) she broke free from tradition as a result of the #MeToo movement.

Combining Direct Carving into stone and bone with 3D scanning, printing and casting she turns her unique sculptures into statement jewellery and pop-art figurines. By developing the original stonecarvings in this way, wider access is given to her art and funds raised for charities supporting trauma recovery and women's health, period poverty and abortion rights.

While inviting conversation on challenging topics, her work is imbued with an underlying sense of reverence and soothing tactility.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

The postcard drawings are based on my stone sculptures, carved as act of reconciliation with my body after sexual abuse. Consciously and unconsciously I found myself tapping into and getting sustenance from ancient depictions of the 'Sacred Wound' and 'Anasyrma'. This gesture of lifting one's skirt to display the genitals can be an apotropaic device to ward off evil, or to provoke laughter and healing. It is a defiant act that is increasingly re-emerging in political protests around the world. The Sheela-na-gig is a tribute to the 12th century Irish stonecarving that was recently included in the British Museum's Feminine Power exhibition.
