About

Rie Kitagawa (b. 1964, Fukuoka, Japan) is a Japanese-born artist based in Norway. Her projects are about creating space for creative interpretation of mythical stories or iconic figures. Rie does this by privatizing myths and icons. This process starts when she photographs her daughters as models. The images convey emotional states. The body and body positions play a significant role, intended to convey narratives, something close and at the same time theatrical. Rie wants to distinguish antagonists with characteristics and emotions that are not conveyed in the original myths. The artist mainly work with pastels in large formats, making it possible to explore colours in a particular way.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

According to this project i made the smallest drawing I ever tried. This was the challenge. In my pictures, the image convey emotional states and the body and body positions play an important role, meant to convey stories, something close and at the same time theatrical. I hope I created a kind of dynamic that is similarly intimate, mainly because of its size.
