Ceramics & Craft Studio Sale 2023 | Poppy Fuller Abbott
02 JUNE 2023 - 23 JUNE 2023Notes
Poppy is a weaver and dyer based in Hove. Her practice focuses on consciously sourced materials; she works intuitively with plant dyes and natural fibres, some of which are grown locally or foraged. Poppy explores the dialogue between her fluid approach to dying, and the measured, linear process of weaving. As an artist, Poppy personifies materials and the transformative powers of craft processes; she feels that the materials embody traces of her through their prolonged contact during the making process. She is inspired by folk customs and how we relate to ritual in our current world. Traces of things, memories and narratives inspire her to reflect on the past and people’s daily lives and surroundings. She was particularly influenced by a trip to Japan in 2019 where she researched the Mingei movement and visited Kyoto, Tokyo and Mashiko.
Poppy studied Textile Design at Central Saint Martins, where she specialised in weaving. After her Ba she was accepted on to the year-long course in Natural Dying with Jenny Dean at Ditchling Museum. She has recently graduated with a distinction from a Masters in Craft at Brighton University and is now based at Studio 50 in Hove.
In 2018, Poppy received the Clothworkers Award at Cockpit Arts, where she had a studio and was part of their business incubation programme. Poppy is currently one of the Toast New Makers for 2023.
Poppy has been featured in several publications such as Ateliers D’Art in France, House & Garden in the UK, and Wallpaper Magazine in the US. She has exhibited her work at Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft in their Colour Journeys show. Her work has also been shown at Cockpit Open Studios, Peckham Craft Show and as part of the Toast New Makers programme in the Crafts Council gallery and at Toast Bath, Mayfair, Edinburgh and Islington.
