Notes

‘Chelsea Mist 1’, by the London/Paris based photographer Julian Marshall is part of a series of images taken by the artist from the House Boat Amari - a converted barge moored at Old Ferry Wharf in Chelsea where the artist lived between 2006-2012. The picture is of the Thames at Chelsea, with a view of the sweeping river at Chelsea Reach.

Taken early one morning, the steeple of St Mary’s Church can be seen on the left-hand side of the frame, along with the Montevetro Building designed by Richard Rogers, and the Battersea Railway Bridge breaking through the mist in the middle of the frame. Whilst to the right, the shadows of Chelsea Harbour creep out into the morning light.

Taken from the lower deck of the artist’s boat, this picture reflects both the majestic power of the Thames, and the special tranquillity of early morning. In the six years that the artist lived at House Boat Amari, he was fascinated by the changing moods of the river and completed a number of works during this period, utilising the exquisite light that emanated from the historic Thames.
