Notes

Powerstock Fields is a painting of luscious rolling hills in the Dorset countryside. Gerry Dudgeon, the son of a tea planter in India, on moving to England fell in love with the Westcountry and has since established himself as a prominent painter in the region.

Combing an interest in archaeology, and graduating in Fine Art from Camberwell School of Art, Dudgeon approaches the canvas with an ambition to portray both the rich organic history of the landscape and the traces of man’s momentary impact on the planet.

Using the end of his paint brush, the Dorset based artist scratches paths and animal trails into the impasto of his paint. They meander up and down the coastal hillsides and disappear into the dramatic contours and curves of the skyline.

At the same time, twisting forms emerge from the corner of the canvas reminding the viewer of a far greater and longer history – the fossils of creatures that inhabited this stretch of landscape millions of years ago.

The artist’s subtle frame enhances the ‘escapist’ nature of this painting as the viewer is transported to the top of a Powerstock hill exercising their eyes over the view.
