Fundraising Auction Art Academy London - Timed
28 APRIL 2023 - 18 MAY 2023Notes
These pieces are the starting point of my current practice. They represent the introduction of the construction materials into Mercedes' work as a way of reducing her environmental impact. Today most of her work is made with construction materials or biodegradable materials. Balle explores the passage of time and obsolescence of what was useful and no longer is; contrasting temporalities of living beings to the material world we have built around us.
Mercedes Balle’s practice explores the connection and disconnection with the natural world. Inspired by the sublime, the urban landscape of London has become her area of research. She’s a mixed-media artist and a painter without paint.
Mercedes sees the construction materials as the most significant disconnection between nature and herself; therefore she uses these materials to make art about nature; she transforms them into works which question the problems of our economy in relation to the environment. She uses these materials again and again, trying to squeeze their possibilities and save them from obsolescence repeatedly. She also uses natural-biodegradable materials ensuring that these works will never finish at a landfill and will continue the circle of life.
Balle explores the passage of time and obsolescence of what was useful and no longer is; contrasting temporalities of living beings to the material world we have built around us.
