Notes
Using the cut and paste of collage, Maggie Williams delicately transforms familiar art historical images from Phaidon's The Art Book: Revised Edition with wit that speaks to popular culture as well as the history of art.
In the 20th Century, Rene Magritte's iconic surrealist work, The Treachery of Images, mocked the language of art versus reality. For Magritte this image was simply a representation of a pipe and not an actual pipe. In response and by cutting out the text, Maggie Williams replies with playfulness to Magritte's work and to our relationship with fine art imagery. Her work has a cleverness which is both humane and well observed.
