Inception – Charity Auction for Make 2nds Count
24 APRIL 2023 - 13 MAY 2023Notes
This roundel was made using a unique preservation technique to transform hand picked Ribwort into a permanent artwork. The impression of the weeds were captured in grey clay and then preserved in plaster of paris.
I have always been drawn to Ribwort, it reminds me of summer days and it covers the banks of the path to the beach in Fife where I regularly swim. Their strong structure makes them perfect for casting and I love the combination of their delicate seed heads and structured leaves.
I'm Katy, the maker behind Imprint casts. My works focuses on capturing the ephemeral, transient beauty of nature and preserving it through a unique casting process. All my works are created using flowers and foliage hand picked from my mother's garden and woodland in Fife; the flowers are then carefully pressed into clay and their delicate imprint preserved in plaster of Paris. I use a combination of grey or terracotta clay to capture the floral imprint and either leave the casts in their natural plaster finish or hand paint the background using unwanted household tester paint pots. I learnt botanical casting from my mum, the original maker of Imprint, and have taken over as the main casting artist over the last few years. As well as creating works for galleries and bespoke interior commissions, I also preserve wedding bouquets, funeral wreaths or flowers from a place of personal importance to you.
