Notes

A warehouse rave by  Raffy Bushman inspired this painting by Miranda Pissarides, which in turn inspired Raffy to compose and release Mad Alvar's Two Step - an experimental jazz rift with this original painting as the cover artwork.

The Saatchi Gallery Young Artist Award winner, Miranda Pissarides, mixes raw pigments in a unique recipe developed through years of practice, commitment and late-night studio experiments. This guarded concoction is then painted, pulled and drawn across canvases to the artist’s satisfaction before being fixed in position using a flame thrower and palette knife.

The canvas is revisited over numerous days with pigment and resin reapplied to create the layers of different textures and colours that we see in her finished work. You can see a video of her practice here

Raffy Bushman is a pianist and composer based in London. He is the musical director at Unit31, a cultural collective which champions the up and coming in the music and film world. He is also the founder of the Nushape Orchestra, a project which mixes modern music with more traditional instrumentation. He is currently working towards a release of original music with his piano trio.

Miranda Pissarides and Raffy Bushman continue to explore the relationship between sound, colour and form, engaging in a new kind of dialogue. ‘Drop’ is the first and most monumental result of this pairing.
