Notes
"Most of my recent paintings stem from ideas about ambiguity and visual perception. I like to paint images that look like ‘something’ but are not easily identified. When the viewer isn’t sure what it is they are seeing their brain has to try to figure it out; one person will see folds of cloth across a body and another will see rolling hills in a landscape. Visual perception is mostly in the brain, so how someone interprets the ambiguous image is unique to them, but they will often be surprised that others don’t see the same thing. I am also interested in sunlight, painterly space and colour relationships." Julie Caves, 2020
