Life on Venus II | The Human, Timed Auction
12 JANUARY 2021 - 28 JANUARY 2021Notes
My practice focuses on the idea of identity, especially on alter egos and alternate identities. I make soft puppets out of fabrics and often create fantastical set-like installations with them and a costumed me, that I then photograph. These show my love for the theatrical and the Victorian aesthetic.
I channel my alter egos through these puppets and thus question the reality of identity…what is real and what is fake. Are we tied to one body or does who we are surpass the constraints of a human body? The physically human holds a conversation with the psychologically human in my work. Puppets and dolls relate to themes of manipulation, miniaturization, and control. My practice interrogates how much we are ‘puppetized’ in the way we are programmed to represent ourselves, especially through social media platforms.
