Notes

“These are two figures takem from my sculpture studies, they often appear in my paintings or alongside other sculptures.”

Stephen Appleby-Barr’s paintings combine fantastical and autobiographical elements to create wide-sweeping narratives. His work references art history, literature, and costume and set-design while his human and animal muses contribute an original and contemporary twist. In preparation for his paintings, Appleby-Barr constructs small sculptures and architectural maquettes to establish his characters in other-wordly three-dimensional space.

Born in 1981 in Toronto, Stephen Appleby-Barr is currently based in London, England. His work has been exhibited and collected in Canada, the United States and Europe. Appleby-Barr’s remarkable facility extends to printmaking. He has created several etchings printed with world-renowned Master Printer, Gregory Burnet of Burnet Editions, and published by Nicholas Metivier Gallery.
