Out of the Margins
15 SEPTEMBER 2023 - 06 OCTOBER 2023Notes
Listed as one of The Guardian's "50 best theatre shows of the 21st century”, The Encounter is an unique, beguiling, enthralling solo show telling the true tale of Loren McIntyre, an American photographer who travelled to Brazil in 1969 and found himself lost and living with the Mayoruna tribe, a period of time which brought the limits of human consciousness into startling focus. Simon McBurney, Artisic Director of internationally renowned theatre company Complicite, travelled to the Amazon rainforest with Sound Designer Gareth Fry to capture audio for the groundbreaking and award-winning binaural 3D sound design, which the audience experience through personal headphones.
Wow! This pencil-annotated script is filled with deep insight into creative visionary Simon McBurney’s thoughts behind the play and it’s themes. “What stories are we living? What stories am I living?” His extensive commentary reflects on moments he found challenging as a performer - without doubt a "tour-de-force" (Financial Times) solo performance. You can also discover why it’s called The Encounter.
"This is masterful storytelling from a man and a company who are incapable of remaining within known theatrical boundaries" (The Independent). This lot is a rare insight into one of the most innovative theatremakers working today.
