Studio Sale | Adam Robinson 2024
25 JANUARY 2024 - 07 FEBRUARY 2024Notes
Adam Robinson’s work reflects his passion for colour, found materials and the processes of collecting and arranging. He draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources with architecture and the built environment being particularly influential.
The found and sometimes forgotten materials he uses, with their strong sense of nostalgia and history, are a further source of inspiration and fascination to him. He aims to transform these objects such that they exist in a more contemporary and ordered context with a clean, vibrant aesthetic.
In this work, ‘Make & Mend’, Robinson displays a collection of vintage, deconstructed magazine covers arranged on canvas with painted wooden pieces. The work is mounted behind conservation glass within a dark brown, wooden frame. Using issues of The Practical Household magazine from the 1950's, segments have been cut from the front covers and laid out to form a vibrant, geometric pattern. The mid-century colours and depictions of domestic life at the time evoke a sense of nostalgia. Inspired by British post-war architecture, the pattern resembles an apartment block complete with windows and corresponding ledges.
Since graduating in Australia with a degree in Theatre Design he has worked primarily in television as an Art Director but now focuses on his art practice. Adam Robinson is represented by Select Gallery in Notting Hill, has exhibited in numerous exhibitions and art fairs both in London and New York, and has been highlighted by Rebecca Wilson, chief curator at Saatchi Art, as One to Watch.
