Studio Sale | Adam Robinson 2024
25 JANUARY 2024 - 07 FEBRUARY 2024Notes
Adam Robinson’s work reflects his passion for colour, found materials and the processes of collecting and arranging. He draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources with architecture and the built environment being particularly influential.
The found and sometimes forgotten materials he uses, with their strong sense of nostalgia and history, are a further source of inspiration and fascination to him. He aims to transform these objects such that they exist in a more contemporary and ordered context with a clean, vibrant aesthetic.
In this work, ‘Topolino’, Robinson displays a collection of vintage comic panels arranged on canvas with painted wooden strips. The work is mounted behind conservation glass within a dark brown, wooden frame. Using two identical copies of an Italian Disney comic from 1973, these panels have been cut from pages and laid out to form a vibrant, geometric pattern. The intended story arc has been scrambled in the arrangement allowing a new, absurd narrative to form. The artwork mainly features depictions of Mickey Mouse who is known in Italy as Topolino.
Since graduating in Australia with a degree in Theatre Design he has worked primarily in television as an Art Director but now focuses on his art practice. Adam Robinson is represented by Select Gallery in Notting Hill, has exhibited in numerous exhibitions and art fairs both in London and New York, and has been highlighted by Rebecca Wilson, chief curator at Saatchi Art, as One to Watch.
