17 JANUARY 2022 - 08 FEBRUARY 2022, Ended 04:00 PM (UK time)This studio sale presents recent studies from the last few year’s of Julie-Ann Simpson’s practice but also never-before-seen painted sketches and studies straight from the studio. These developmental pieces explore new narratives and carry the sensitive use of colour that has become synonymous with her work.
Julie-Ann Simpson
Born in Aberdeen in 1992, Simpson studied Painting at Gray’s School of Art before relocating to Glasgow where she is now based.
Simpson is interested in the porous boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, dreams and reality. The paintings sit in that transitional place, often beginning as representations, but eventually seem to slip into ambiguous afterimages. Initially working mostly with colour and surfacing to create abstractions based on landscape and ideas of the sublime, over the last few years Simpson has returned to the figure and considered the way in which we situate ourselves in the world.
The figures in these recent works are undergoing a process of transformation; engaged in ambiguous rituals, in some cases they begin to merge with the landscape in which they inhabit. There is a longing in these pictures which speaks to a desire to cultivate a more authentic and intentional relationship with the natural world, calling on imagery from mythology and folklore.
