Notes

Breaking Wave at Fistral
“The inspiration for this piece is one of my home town beaches, Fistral Beach in Newquay. This beach is infamous for its big swells which see body boarders and surfers flock to them from all over the globe. I wanted to capture the moment that a wave is just breaking, all the power surging up behind it. One of the main focuses of my work is re-purposing and this piece uses offcuts of fibreglass from surfboard shaper Rochfort Customs to build the depth of that breaking wave. Once coated in paint these offcuts give me incredible texture to work around and by me re-using them, it means Rochfort Customs are one step closer to being zero waste.”

Gemma Lessinger
Cornwall based artist Gemma Lessinger is mesmerized by the sea and her textural artworks are an ode to the wild, powerful and healing properties of time spent by the ocean. With her use of sea salt and sand her paintings are infused with the elements, which she collects and mixes into her pigments. She instinctively portrays the feeling of a beach, tidal pool, or hidden cove, using texture to capture the momentum of breaking waves.
