Terrence Higgins Trust - 2022, Timed Auction
20 FEBRUARY 2022 - 09 MARCH 2022Notes
A central figure in contemporary figurative painting, Norbert Bisky was born 1970 in Leipzig, Germany, and studied at the Berlin University of the Arts with Georg Baselitz and Jim Dine. Bisky’s work has been exhibited worldwide and is represented in numerous collections including the Museum Ludwig, MoMA, and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Bisky lives and works in Berlin and Málaga. His latest solo exhibition `Mirror Society` is on view at the SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia, USA.
Chaotic explosions, ambiguous physical struggles between male figures, and the state of instability expressed by falling and tumbling figures typify the contradictory images in the paintings of Bisky. In his work, the artist combines the impressions from subsequent travels, commenting on pop culture and contemporary media in colourful scenes evoking themes of beauty, sexuality, violence, and destruction.
