Notes

All This Has Happened Before conveys a powerful sense of movement like sunlight bursting through heavy cloud after a storm. For Genevieve Leavold the work is about the ability to find light in the darkest moments.

Genevieve, a British abstract painter based in Belgrade, works to create freeform, organic paintings and drawings. Central to her work are questions about our increasing separation from nature and the impact this has on our humanity.

Growing up in Somerset, Genevieve explains that as a child she spent hours amongst nature observing it closely. She is now particularly drawn to organic forms like lichen, mosses and Fungi, marine plant and microbiological and mycological shapes and colours.

Genevieve's work is gestural and immediate, working wet colour into wet and layering glazes. She describes her process of application of paint on canvas as a mediative process.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
