Notes
Tessa Houghton creates a feeling of breadth and distance with the low level, receding horizon and expansive sky.
Using layers of glazes and textural mediums to enrich her abstract landscapes, the artist prefers to draw on the power of suggestion in her paintings, rather than carefully delineating a specific place. Often abstracted by weather conditions, her landscapes speak the language of both abstraction and figuration.
"The resulting images are ambiguous rather than definitive. I like the idea that they will trigger a memory or a sensation by being recognisable or familiar in some way"
Tessa sites impulsive and gestural mark making as key to this process but she is careful to explain that this is tempered with controlled brush strokes. Tess notes that, "The painting process is balanced by observation and intuition. Surfaces are scratched into and paint layered on, then scraped away to hide or reveal what is underneath."
Her paintings attempt to explore themes of fragility and strength, death and renewal, transience and endurance.
