Notes
Originally part of a larger composition, Klaus is Koming's Gummi Venus de Milo is a new take on the ancient Greek statue sculpture of Aphrodite, the Venus de Milo.
"I like to make work that’s fun and pertinent, taking themes and forms that are usually considered shameful or uncouth and making them empowering."
Klaus often takes images from adult magazines aimed at men and recreates them for an entirely different audience. She comments, "You know, taking things usually reserved for the top shelf of shady shops on dimly lit corners and bring them to the living room." it’s
all about changing the perception of something perhaps considered ‘shameful’ into something that says:
"hey, look how great these women are and how proud they are of their bodies. it’s all about taking private images and placing them into the public sphere. I like to create a fun space to have conversations that can often be quite heavy and difficult. My recent work has been incorporating more classical poses and themes. Women sprawled in luscious environments. I’m interested in finding a balance of what is considered crude and what is seen as a ‘nude’ - Exploring that tipping point."
