Notes

Louis Cooper fuses the recognisably English cliffs of Worth Matravers in Dorset with a traditional African mask to create a surreal scene that appears like an ancient, undiscovered landmark.

The sea mist that obfuscates the horizon, the intrepid explores on the cliff edge and the grainy nature of the print all confounds our sense of time, leaving the viewer questioning if this really could be a landmark they have never ventured upon, or perhaps one that has been weathered by the sea and is now destroyed.

This photomontage uses 35mm frame shots from the cliffs as well as a photograph taken by Louis of a contemporary sculpture by the artist Zak Ove in The Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Part of a series of experimental surrealist and monochrome works, Louis takes inspiration from surrealist photographers such as Dora Maar and Maurice Tabbard.
