Notes
My Footprints, Gulf of Finland was created during arctic conditions onboard a ferry carving a passage through the ice-laden waters between Helsinki and Tallinn.
This photograph has a common message for us all, and also has personal significance for the artist. Edward Hopley took this photograph on a journey to make new work after the untimely death of his mother.
"My footprints in the snow covering the deck are proof of my presence on the journey, yet equally they allude to absence, my mind clearly being elsewhere. Returning to this image almost ten years later to produce the print edition, it takes on a new significance relevant to us all and which places it perfectly within my environmentally driven oeuvre, that being the carbon footprint such journeys create, particularly those made by commercial shipping and aviation, that we are now so keenly aware of and urgently have to take action to mitigate."
Throughout the body of Edward’s work he regularly returns to the themes of absence and presence and the traces that people leave behind.
