Notes

A painting executed through the lens of print making, Tazelaar Stevenson plays with the layering of transparent colours and subtle textures.

By working with a loose set of rules and restrictions, Tazelaar gradually builds up this work, allowing the shape and composition of the work to be found through his artistic process until he is satisfied with the dimensionality of his layering.

Tazelaar Stevenson’s creative practice spans across media, including screenprinting, drawing and painting , as well as incorporating music and field recordings. Tazelaar’s work is rooted in a felt connection with nature: as a life long birdwatcher, the artist seeks to connect his experiences to his practice through walking, investigating, recording and scanning the landscape.

Such organic foundations are, it seems, in tension with Tazelaar’s focus on the process of making - allowing techniques and procedures such as screenprinting to carry out the work and often determine the final outcome. It is a tension reflected in his prints and paintings, where bold, shifting stripes and rays - geometric patterns and layers of tones and colours - are augmented with loose, gestural marks, and an overall sense of fluidity. Tazelaar’s thin layering of flat colour creates an uncanny impression, much like the exquisite shades of an eggshell, the fine richness of porcelain or simply the necessity of a boundless black.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
