Notes
Window takes its cue from a still of the American true crime TV show Forensic Files (1996-2011).
Hannah Short finds it more interesting to study human traces than to study people directly. In this painting her interest in nineties pop culture and forensic investigations is played out in an near voyeuristic scene. It is as if someone is suspiciously watching this house for any signs of he activity that takes place within.
Culture from the time period of Hannah's childhood, the 1990s - 2000s has a big influence on her practice. She is drawn to the time before the social dependence on the internet that we have today of which her memories are vague, unreliable and colourful.
It is this perception that influences her style. She explains that she is also influenced by today’s culture with its anxieties, distractions and constant stream of altered, exaggerated versions of our lives that we edit and post online. "My work is a conversation between my childhood and my present, my somewhat fiction and my reality."
