Notes
Blue Samba is made up of bands of cobalt and gold which evolve playfully into a series of undulating lines.
Scott Bauer explores the relationship between linear formalism and naturalism, "I like to play with formal systems and literally erode them away or, in this work, turn them into something more sinuous and liberated."
The title refers to the music of Brazilian musician and Bossa Nova pioneer João Gilberto who inspired the artwork. The artist explains, "Music plays a pivotal role in the creative process for me and I often title my works after specific musical terms, styles and even nods to particular song titles. When I started formatting my works in a vertical grid rather than a landscape or seascape with a definite horizon line, the rhythms of lines reminded me of sound waves or notes on a piece of sheet music. The breaks and shifts in colour, often incorporating chromatic harmonies that contrast sharply, create subtle visual vibrations."
